Amoy, home of tea. The word ‘tea’ as we know it in English derived from the local dialect. Continental Europe which bought tea through the Silk Road since ancient time knew it by the name ‘Chai’ which is still the way it is pronounced in Mandarin (or standard Chinese). Amoy benefited much from its opening to trade, and its customs rose in importance.
