【Special Features:  Lithograph Issue】

IJPO combination, 1897 Shanghai (21 Oct.) registered envelope to Baltimore, Md., U.S.A. (24.11).  On reverse “Shanghai Customs/Mail Matter” oval h.s. (type II) in blue, another impressed on the wax seal. Then franked with I.C.P. 1c., 4c., 5c., and 10c. cancelled by “Shanghai” dollar chop (22.10) in blue, and bearing on front Japan Koban 10s. pair cancelled by “Shanghai/ I.J.P.O.” c.d.s. (23.10), with “R” unframed h.s. in red and “R (framed) Shanghai” h.s. in red adjacent. Late usage of the Customs Mail Matter handstamp, withdrawn from use on 31 December 1897, so stamps were applied.  Annotated “Per ‘s/s Rio’ via Honolulu” and via Yokohama (28.10) and San Francisco (17.11).
