【More on China Penny Blacks】
Our record shows that this China Penny Black cover was sold by Sotheby Parke Bernet on 4-5 December 1980 in the Ryohei Ishikawa sales, as lot number 550. This cover appeared again as lot 1002 in Spink’s auction (TWYSTE Collection) on 29 Nov, 2005. It was in the Mayers collection, before passing on to Mr Steve Chazen’s collection.
My query of whether the stamp and the cancellation was a later addition was satisfied by the fact that the ink of the canceller sunk through the lettersheet. Attached image show the back of the lettersheet where the Penny Black was adhered.
It is the earliest of the 3 Penny Black covers related to China.
