SIAM : classic stamps & postal history

Mid 19th century through the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Rama V

This exhibit collection is in two parts:

Part 1 explores the postal system before Siam joined the Universal Postal Union in 1885. The focus is on the British Consulate Post Office which handled most of Siam’s international mail during the period.

Part 2 documents the stamps issued from 1885 to 1910, the end of the classic era and the end of the reign of King Rama V. The focus is on the long succession of surcharges that characterize the period. The time line runs through the reigns of three monarchs, Nangklao, Rama Ill (reign 1824-1851), Mongkut, Rama IV (1851-1868), and Chulalongkorn, Rama V (1868-1910).
